It’s sedimentary quality increases its versatility. Mixed with various portions of other blues, French Ultramarine is a wonderful sky pigment. Modify it with Quinacridone Gold for delightful greens that remain color-coordinated. Mix French Ultramarine with Quinacridone Burnt Orange and be rewarded with an amazing range of blue to brown grays. Mixed with either Quinacridone Rose or Pink, a range of purples result. For another important mix, see Hooker’s and Sap Green.

Ultramarine Blue and French Ultramarine both contain pigment PB29, but Ultramarine has a smaller pigment particle size and is slightly greener and cooler than French Ultramarine, which has a larger pigment particle size and is slightly redder and warmer.

Starting with 10 parts water to 1 part paint (by weight) in the palette, our chemist paints the top half of the swatch uniformly with a round brush to show the paint’s color and characteristics. For the bottom half, he dips a ¾” flat brush into the paint well just once, then applies the color in stripes until the brush is dry, which shows the color’s tone and behavior through a wash. We use these swatches for color matching during the manufacturing process.

Pigment: PB 29 | Series: 2
Lightfastness: I – Excellent
Transparency: Transparent
Staining: 3-Medium Staining
Granulation: Granulating

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0840/2662/2125/files/52ac4541-Daniel-Smith-Tube-S2-French-Ultramarine.jpg?v=1791678631
https://www.paletteartsupplies.com/products/daniel-smith-extra-fine-watrecolors-15ml-tube-french-ultramarine-series-2
